NEED HELP: 3- Tip upgrade. Anybody running just L10 torque converter with stock valve bodies?
I know, I know I shouldn't be driving a Tip but please look past that and help a brother out. My '00 S4 is at Matrix getting a 3- upgrade with K04s and GIAC 3- software. Install is done, but they're experiencing strange power surges (small jump from 2000 to 2200 rpms when crusing) on test drives. They called L10 and L10 said it's because I didn't upgrade my valve bodies. I did quite a bit of research (STFA) before deciding on this upgrade and it sounded like some of you just upgraded the torque converter. Is anybody running a similar setup and are you experiencing the same little power surges?? Any info you can provide would be very helpful. Thanks!

Could be TC lockup causing the surge. With a higher stall converter the transition between
fluid coupling and lockup is a little more abrupt. I'm not sure if Sam compensates with a bigger lockup port in the VB to keep the pressure down on TC lockup. See if Matrix can log during the surging, and check the TCU for lockup solenoid engagement during the surge.

Do tell more.. I would love to hear how I can go Stage III without spending thousands on the tranny.
I'll defect to the other side (6-speed) before doing that.

Just do it and drive it til it breaks. Thats what the sux speeds do too.
TC is undoubtedly the weak link, although higher stall is harder on the clutch packs (esp od gears). Its a viscous circle of trans mods. Who cares its a car they all break anyway just drive it til its pissing blood all over the pavement, then you know you had some fun.

ask on A6 board. I think 1 has done that Update:
if you end up needing a new tranny I have a used S4 tip tranny in the garage, will let it go for less than the going rate is,,,used to something like $2500 on this board.. Havent checked in a while

My car exhibits this and I have a stock tranny. MTM chip with GIAC tip chip.
It's noticable when the car is cold or going up slopes. eg: going about 40mph in 5th. ECU and TCU are probably confused because of the increase in hp and torque. Perhaps the TC doesn't know when to lock up? Or maybe it's your throttle body?
