Two bases, one for the S one for the A and the the stroller...
A few suggestions...don't buy the seat based on the stroller, or vice versus. It will only be a month or two till he can sit in the stroller with the headrest..and you can leave the car seat behind. Choose a carrier that is VERY LIGHT! What seems light in the store, will rip your arms out of the sockets once junior is in it.
And, go for the carrierthat has the handle turned 90 degrees to the seat. It's far more comfortable...for you.
Not necessarily this brand, but note the turned handle...

A Britax Roundabout in the Explorer and a Marathon in the allroad. $500 worth of seats, but my daughter (23 months) is worth anything I could buy.
For the first 2 months I borrowed a Graco Baby carrier thingie for in my wife's Explorer because she liked the idea of the base staying in place and the carrier snapping in and out. But the Roundabout was in my old A6 from day one. On trips she was in the Roundabout after 4 weeks safe and secure.
Marathon is just a bigger Roundabout. We have the mongo- child. 23 months and she's 95th percentile height and weight- 34" tall and 31 lbs. Marathon goes to 50 or 60 lbs IIRC.
Nice thing about the Britax seats in rear facing mode is that they can be tethered. Not many (if any) other seats can be tethered in rear facing.
Donwsides? Well they aren't cheap. And they tend to be bigger than other seats because of the way they are built. But that's why they're so good.

She had a hard time believing I was a single guy driving a station wagon, but somehow I managed to trick her ;-)
