Default Need to replace front rotors, instructions for removing front calipers?

I am replacing my front rotors and I need some instructions on how to take the caliper off. Also, when I put the caliper back on, what are the torque specs for all the bolts? TIA

Advice: impact wrench is your friend.

Default Or just the right size breaker bar. :-)

I think the torque is over 100 lb-ft, I can find it tonight. Plus remember to clean the grooves under the bolt heads if you are reusing them.

Default Here's a quick run-down for removing the front calipers...

============================================
TIPS
====
* Spin the steering wheel all the way to the right if you're working on the left-front. Spin it all the way to the left if you're working on the right-front. This will provide additional clearance when you're loosening/tightening the caliper bolts.

* A cheater-pipe over a socket wrench will help to remove the caliper bolts.

============================================

1) With the front end of the car up on jackstands, remove both front wheels.

2) With pliers, release the spring hinge at the top of the caliper that holds the pads in place. (Photo courtesy of Sharon)

3) Wedge a screwdriver between the brake pads & the caliper (you'll see the slot). This will compress the pistons. (Photo courtesy of Sharon)

4) Starting at the left-front, remove both caliper bolts. You may need a short socket-extension (I used a 3" one but it was barely long enough with a normal (non-deep) socket). The caliper/pads should now slide up and over the "lip" of the rotor. Make sure to support the caliper on something so you don't strain the brake lines.

5) Using a dead-blow mallet, strike the face of the rotor with a few hard hits. This was enough to loosen the rust between the hub/rotor and my old rotor fell right off (watch your toes & fingers!).

6) Using a wire brush, clean up the hub face to provide a nice clean surface for the rotor to mate up to. Some folks would suggest applying some enti-sieze to the rotor/hub interface. I didn't bother.

7) Install new rotor.

8) Reinstall brake caliper/pads. Torque caliper bolts to 148 ft.-lbs. Reinstall the spring hinge on the caliper.

9) Turn steering wheel the opposite way, and repeat the process on the right side.

Before you start the car, make sure you pump the brake pedal a few times to move the pads back in toward the rotor.
