Default New Clutch Questions...and pics of a 78k OE clutch / RMS. (BWW)

Backgroud:
https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/2577642.phtml

So i had an indy shop put in a new clutch kit along with pilot bearing and Rear Main Seal. My first impression was that the clutch was WAY lighter which kind of worried me. Shifting is WAY smoother than before. I'm not sure if this is becuase of the new clutch disengaging all the way or if they aligned the shifter better than i had it or a combo of the two.

The shop guy said the clutch failed becuase of wear on the pressure plate. I didnt see how this could cause my symptoms and he gave some roundabout excuse. He didnt see that there was a tooth missing on the PP so i assume that was the cause of my clutch not disengaging.

Questions:

1) Does this look like a stock clutch they put in? Reason i ask is that its soo much lighter than before.

2) Was his reason about the worn pressure Plate a BS excuse bc he didnt see the missing tooth on the PP? (Or could this tooth have been broken off when they removed the clutch?)

Picture Time...TIA for the help

Default The heavy pedal feel of the old clutch was due to it being worn beyond the limits of the SAC

mechanism. Take a look at the springs. The missing tooth is one of the limiters to the clutch travel. It does nothing more than prevent the clutch from being pushed in too far.

Default Did they remove and reseal the lower/upper oil pans when they did the RMS? Coolant and oil flush?

How much did they charge you if you don't mind me asking? That is a pretty touchy job.

I agree with DAP, the reason the clutch feels lighter is because it is not worn and the SAC can do its thang.

Default Fair enough... Since it was a sudden total failure do you think that was from the broken tooth or

it just got to that point where the slave JUST didnt have enough travel to disengage.

And on top of that how does one shear off a limiter tooth?

my PP failed with a similar broken tooth. could be just metal fatigue.

Default I'm not sure about resealing the pans? Tell me more...

I was under the impression that a RMS job when the tranny was out consisted of taking the old one off, cleaning it up, and putting a new one on. (Ignorance is bliss) I think he only tacked on another 1/2 hr of labor and a about 100 for the new RMS.

They did do a coolant and oil flush. (he said they spray solvents so they want fresh fluids in there.)

As for cost i have a breakdown at home but i think it was a total of 12 hrs for everything and ended up being 1715.

Let me know if you want part cost breakdowns.

Default I just found it hard to properly seal the RMS without taking the upper/lower oil pans off...

he probably said the solvent thing because after they clean the rear main seal flange with a razor they most likely sprayed it down with brake clean to get everything nice before adding the sealant.

Default Was it a limit tooth or a spring tooth?...before the failure and all 18k miles I've put on

it the clutch has always felt the same. Thats why i figured it was the tooth that put me on the side of the road.

gorgeous car BTW
