Default NEW GUY - NEEDS HELP

OK I am very close on trading my 99 BMW M coupe in for a nice 2000 Silver S4. 46K miles, decent condition, 2 more years of warranty.

What should I lookout for?
If I mod the car, will the turbos fail.
APR has a chip that allows to return to stock, any feedback?

Would love your help!

Thanks,

G

Buy it. Do your research with the search function. All answers are there.

Default Im not a mod fan...read on

My car has gone 55,000 miles with absolutely no problems at all. I have the original factory clutch, turbos, pumps, everything...I dont think people with mods can say the same thing. Then again, I also know some people who go in at 30,000 miles and need new clutch and turbos because they dont know how to take care of it. Clean oil and letting the turbos cool down after a hard run (idle for a minute or 2) really prolonged the life on my car. My clutch is still perfect because I dont launch that car much, I have my fun in the canyons. I would say the only wear on my car is the springs and tires. Good luck!

I was thinking about a chip and exhaust. Is that going to kill the car?

Default I chipped mine at 16K and still have the factory turbos. Replaced rear main seal, dunno if it was .

really leaking and a rear tail shaft seal. That's about it. Replaced the clutch while I did the seal. Just replaced tie rod ends at 57K. Washer bottle, fhose, tbb . . . the standard small stuff . . .

Default There are plenty of STOCK owners that have problems...

Any plenty of MODIFIED owners that have no problems. Unless you can show a statistical correlation between modified cars and problems, then it's all just heresay.

Default 60K here, been chipped for 40K and have done numerous track events...

and a few autoXs. Original turbos *knockonwood* and original clutch as well as other ancillary pieces.

Of course I have suspension upgrades so I'm not sure how the stock set-up would have survived. My left rear wheel bearing recently died but that's about it for unintended maintenance. YMMV

Default From what I've read here, how the car is cared for is pretty important...

Modding the car doesn't neccesarily mean the turbos will fail. Chips do result in the turbos working harder, which gives you those great increases in HP and torque. Just do a search, there's some BPV and TBB that should be replaced before you chip.

Default bpv == bypass valve, stock is bosch, TBB is throttle body boot

both are known weak spots; both are fairly inexpensive to replace.
