I think I'll stick to the 0W30 weight for the PA winters, but with 121k on my car, I think a thicker oil for the summer is worth a try. The specs for this new Amsoil look really good...and it's "European" too :-p
And for the record....No, I am not an Amsoil dealer.<ul><li><a href="http://www.amsoil.com/products/afl.htm">clicky</a></li></ul>

It is being positioned as a less expensive alternative for the S2K and was supposedily developed for Mercedes initially. Supposedily a great alternative to Mobil1 0W40 but recently having used the 0W40 in my car for 5K mi I won't go back to it... staying on the S2K 0W30. The driving characteristics between the two are very different and for my climate in the SEast either could do the job.
Costs a little more to run the Amsoil though. The only downside I have found so far.

I was pretty happy with the 5w-40 grade. I've switched to Pentosin synthetic now and been very happy with it.
Bought it from: see link below.<ul><li><a href="http://www.autobahnfluids.com">http://www.autobahnfluids.com</a</li></ul>

encouraging in terms of protection if they qualify/downgrade their long life claims so dramatically. PS: what was it about M1 0w40 that was diff, didn't like etc. I've been using M1 0w40 for over 20k miles. Others rave about German Castrol 0w30 (Autozone) and Motul Ester E-Tech 0w40. What is that leads one to conclude a particular brand is "noticeably" superior. I use synthetic only because its generally thought to be the way to go for turbos.

analysis and one of PaJohn's both showed 50-70% effective life left(estimated, mine was run at 5200 mi). I have not done the same with the Mobil1 0W40 but PaJohn has and results were similar iirc.
The different weight for me(0W40) made my car less responsive and I lost 2-3mpg on average in my highway driving. This was comming from 30K mi on S2K 0W30, changed at 35K, and used until my 40K checkup last month. My mileage has returned plus 1mpg on a recent trip(plugs maybe) and the responsiveness is back. Maybe folks don't notice it if they use heavier oils... dunno.

the car just seemed noisier and, as you say, less responsive. I have some German Castrol 0W30 that I was going to try next, but maybe I'll save that and try this new Amsoil.

The Amsoil was in ~8K, and the M1 ~5k. Both reflected plenty of life left in the oil. My OCI is anywhere between 5k and 8k, depending on my mood :-)

Amsoil by the Gal for ~$6 a qt overall. Would like to save a little $$$ but after the M1 0W40 at ~$4.50 qt I'll spend the extra. I didn't notice a difference in noise that I remember fwiw.
I change every 5-6K, depending on when I can get to it(wife/kids/travel etc... have a seat project I am trying to finish/complete - time is a challenge these days).
