It took about a week to decide what to do, about a week to get parts, and about a week for Kenny (of Kentek Motorsports/Dallas) to put the bits in. To narrow it down further, about a day to pull the engine, a day to install the turbos, timing belt, RS4 clutch, a day to reinsert the engine, and a day or so to deal with the oddball broken parts that we did not expect (one cracked motor mount and one oxygen sensor chopped into pieces by a flying turbo impeller).
I feel obliged to sing Kentek's praises (hopefully the fact that they are a tuner for several authorized AW adevertisers will allow my comments to remain). They would have been way behind if Kenny just worked normal hours. There was a lot of midnight oil burned to get the car done. I truely appreciate it. Plus, Kenny even filled up my empty gas tank this morning. A nice touch.
The car now has K04s with the original GIAC 1.1 bar software. Runs great (knock wood since I know there's a lot of technology that can hiccup). I think the downpipes come close to cancelling the lag of the K04s. The power seems very smooth and the change in the clutch is barely noticable.
I haven't/probably won't dyno the car and I'm unlikely to hit the dragstrip anytime soon. But I will post MAF and injector duty cycle numbers when I figure out what to use for a laptop. But....just as a datapoint, the K04 combination with my other stuff (on an A box) seems like a fine drivable combination.
Oh....for those facing the same decision....the bill will run $7.5-8K or so. Now just I need to keep the car w/o any further repairs till 300K miles to make it economical.
