Default Noob question regarding chip swapping.

I currently have an APR chip in my 2000 S4. I plan on switching over to a GIAC soon to be used with a K04/16 PEB set-up.

APR chip questions:
Does the APR component simply unplug from my ECU and I could plug in the GIAC component or is it much more complicated?
Do I have an A-box or M-box or something different?
The APR chip has 3 programs, 93 oct is the highest, how much should I ask for it?

GIAC chip questions:
Does the GIAC piece just plug into my ECU or is it much more complicated?
How much does it cost and who sells it?
I have heard that the chip will need tweaking to work properly with the Piggy set-up using Lemmiwinks. What is Lemmiwinks and how much does it cost?

Thanks,
Jake

Default APR chips are likely soldered to the board, '00 stick cars are 551A box

lemmiwinks is free shareware IIRC
it allows minor tweeking of your engine SW

APR chips aren't chips as such. They are modular circuits which are soldered on in a daughterboard type of configuration, where the OE PROM was. The board will have to be removed with soldering tools by someone who knows how to do it without damaging nearby components or pads.

GIAC chips are generally socketed, but these sockets must be solder installed, again by someone with appropriate tools and expertise.

Lemmiwinks is free. It merely determines which adaptation scales live at which memory addresses based on current values, and tweaks those values within a given range, in order to "trick" the car into adapting itself differently than it would otherwise do, given the software.

If your car is a 2000 MT6, you probably have an A type ECU. If your car is a 2000 Tip, you probably have a B type ECU. However, you can be sure by logging into the Engine Control module with VAG-COM, or looking at the part number on your ECU's case.

Default Thanks guys! Any idea what I should ask for the APR chip & ecu?

Anyone know how much the GIAC chip costs? I have some experience in soldering and electronics, are there good instructions available for installation of the GIAC modual?

Default unless you have serious soldering skillz, don't take a chance on ruining a $500 ecu

as far as prices
check vendors and the AW classifieds
