Default nOObish ? about OBD II fault codes - how long is a code stored for? I scanned my car last night and

got a P0300 (multiple random misfires). this was the only code, no MIL on and this was with a generic code scanner, not a VAG-COM. I changed my battery a few months ago as well. Would disconnecting the battery (radio code didn't have to be entered and I didn't use a memory saver or anything like that) clear such a code, or could this code be from 3 yrs ago (assuming the codes haven't been cleared since the last time the dealer messed with my car)?

This is the first time I have ever read any codes on my car. I bought the code scanner to fix the MIL situation on my kid's car and figured what the heck, I'll scan the S4. Of course, my B5 Passat with 91k on the clock had absolutely no codes...

Thanks in advance for the help!

Default I have never tried my OBDII scanner on the S4, I would think it would only give fault codes (CEL's)

Vag-Com can read non-fault codes (non-CEL). low battery is a non-CEL. I also get a lot of FOB & security codes (non-CEL) w/ the Vag-Com.

Default I have an Actron mid-level model and it does give non-CEL codes. It also provides freeze frame data

the conditions of various sensors and engine operating parameters when the CEL/MIL was turned on. Pretty decent for what I paid. I'm just trying to find out if the codes can live for months, years, or what (if there's no CEL associated). The MIL/CEL on my Acura went off by itself, but the freeze frame data and fault codes were still there.

Default I've always read the data after a battery swap or other DIY's to see what codes are logged.

Never have I checked months later. I would assume a reset after so many restarts of the engine. The ECU does have that much memory to store all that data.
