Any noises coming from the front? Could be a dying water pump or air in the system

Default nope, waterpump replaced when timing belt done anyway..

(and the old one was fine, according to the mechanics inspection) and since the temp "variants" existed prior to the timing belt work I doubt there is air in the system. The Bee seems totally healthy, not throwing codes.. nada.. which makes the whole thing perplexing.

thanks for the answer btw.

Default So you've had three different thermostats?

When I had those symptoms, it was a sticking thermostat. Replacing it solved the problem.

Default counting the original, yes...

and then the two new ones. Were your symptoms "stable" ? That is, the coolant temp always behaves the same way; I would think a sticky thermostat would give more random behaviour ?

thanks Dave,

Ken

Default Yes. When I had a bad thermostat...

coolant temps would drop off while driving normally. They would come up if I was idling for a while (i.e., in traffic) or driving hard.

Replacing the thermostat solved the problem completely.

Are you 100% sure that the shop replaced the thermostat? Just checking.

Default Vancouver, BC

I tried the local S4 community, but there isn't much of an enthusiast base here... or they don't haunt Audiworld of VW Vortex. Mark at AMS was extremely adamant that an ECU would not cause the symptoms my car is displaying... since I'm not an expert I figure I have to take him at his word since he works the code on ECU's ?

thanks
