Default O2 Sensor "internal resistance too high" - take code on face value?

I'm an allroader, but there is more knowledge here on the 2.7T. This code seems straight forward. Internal resistance too high (i.e. it is broken/failed/out of spec/whatever) and it needs a new one.

Should I just buy and replace the Bank 1 Sensor 1 as VAG-COM is telling me or is there any other explanation I should consider before going to the trouble.

Car is a '01 allroad. Codes do come back after being reset once car runs a while. Also, why 2 separate faults for the same sensor? Also, which side is Bank 1 and which sensor is Sensor 1?

Here is the exact text:

<b>Control Module Part Number: 4Z7 907 551
Component and/or Version: 2.7l V6/5VT G 0002
Software Coding: 06712
Work Shop Code: WSC 02325

2 Faults Found:
17539 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor: B2 S1: Internal Resistance too High
P1131 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17521 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor: B1 S1: Internal Resistance too High
P1113 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Default Its not the same sensor. Bank 1 and 2 sensors are both showing resistance too high.

Seems unlikely that both would fail at the same time so there could be another cause for the codes. Any other DTCs present?

Default Bank 1 and Bank 2 are two different sensors (left and right side)...

according to that...both of them are toast. I believe sensor 1 is the pre-cat sensor, and sensor 2 is post-cat.

Default No other codes. And I'm a dufus for not noticing B1 and B2 are throwing codes?

Coincidence that they both failed at same time?!?

What else could cause these faults?

Default Thanks for noticing B1 and B2. That was silly of me not to notice.

it makes sense that S1 is pre-cat and S2 after.

So whadya think? Throw in 2 sensors and cross fingers?

Default I've seen a bad ground to the exhaust cause that problem before, but not on an S4...

No idea if the car would run without the engine/exhaust grounded...

Default Did you by any chance have any of the sensors replaced recently (more)....

I'm only asking because I got this code when I tried to use "off the shelf" bosch O2 sensors instead of genuine Audi ones (This was prior to learning that we can use cheaper VW sensors) -

Anyway, I had the same code in both "aftermarket" O2 sensors - changed to Audi sensors and the codes are gone....My check engine light would go off and on as well

Default I'd replace them - try to get the VW ones - they are....

~$25/each vs. Audi sensors which are ~$170/each...

I've known people who have used them with success - I don't know the VW part number off hand but if you do a search I think it's here somewhere

Default no. They are original with 61,xxx miles. They only thing that changed recently was the addition of

a GIAC chip. I would not think the chip is related.

Default I agree, probably not chip related. Well at $180/each I'd think about trouble...

shooting more. But, with the new info that VW sensors work fine (at $25/each) - I'd probably just replace them both and move on. You're out of warranty so I would NOT pay someone to do it. I've replaced both myself - not too hard if you have access to an O2 sensor socket and a LONG extension.

You can probably find someone near you who can help...I'd post a new thread asking for someone near you.

Now, if you're made of money and really do not care then I guess you could just go to the dealership and tell them to replace both...but, I think they will charge you $170-180 per sensor plus at least 1 hr of labor.
