The break in oil is however, apparently only available at the factory, not to consumers. Just top up with a conventional oil according to manufacturer's recommendations and avoid synthetics until at least first scheduled oil change according to manufacturer's recommendations.

Synthetic Oil is just "too good" for engine break in, in that it can actually prevent break in from proceeding properly. During break in, the engine parts need to wear together somewhat in order to mate properly. Conventional oil, and specifically Audi's factory break in oil, is more ideally suited to the break in process.
Some cars are actually shipped from the factory with synthetic oil (I believe Porsches, and perhaps some others come with synthetic oil from the factory). However, the general consensus here regarding Audi engines and engine break in is that the factory oil, and/or a similar conventional oil, are best for engine break in until at least about 8,000 miles, at which point a switch to synthetic oil is more commonplace.
