Oil Change - Filter Issue

I performed my first oil change on the S4 Avant. Having done numerous oil changes on prior vehicles, I have never been unable to remove the oil filter. I struggled and struggled, even stripping a ratchet attachment removal tool. So I had no choice at the time but to put the new oil in and leave the filter be. Now I'm thinking I will need to buy a special oil filter removal pliers. So here's my question - how much oil will drain out if I remove the filter without draining the oil? My assumption is that a lot of oil will drain out (if not most) but just wanted to check in case someone has tried this. I guess in theory I could catch the clean oil and simply pour it back in. Thanks.

I don't see the big deal...just punch a long screwdriver right through the thing and wrench it OFF!
Oh...and ALL the oil will come out...you'll need a catch basin (CLEAN)
