Default Oil Change Poll determines 0w30 preferred and Mobile 1 and AMSOil brands of choice

Thanks S'ers for the input. I brought a case of Mobile 1 0w30 to the shop to have my oil changed today. Everyone seems to be on the same page with 0W 30/40. It has been +4-8F each day in Milwaukee/ Chicago and the thick oil is chunky on the turbos. This should help.

Default Doh! Here it is, I even replied to it...

I would have thought that Mobil-1 0w-40 would have won the poll, as it certainly seems like the "perfect" oil for the S4 (IMHO).

S4 Oil Poll

Hope they don't void your warranty for that non-spec oil. ;-)

Default I realize it's too late, but here's a bit of feedback

- My car ran at least 20deg hotter w/M1 0w30 when compared to any other oil I've run in the car.
- The new M1 0w30 is now on Mercedes' dis-recommendation list.
- M1 0w30 doesn't meet the spec in your owner's manual (ea... A2+)
- There's good data that shows that M1 0w30 is now no longer a full synthetic

- I've heard nothing but good things about M1 0w40. It's supposedly a "euro blend", and is still fully synthetic. It also meets all of the specs laid out in the owner's manual.

- I did a change this weekend, and the only thing I could find that met all of the specs in the manual was Valvoline Synpower 5w40. I couldn't find M1 0w40 anywhere.

YMMV, FWIW, etc.

Default You're right that M1 0W30 doesn't meet spec, but technically neither does 0W40. Amsoil 0W30 does!

I know the arguments behind M1 0W40 and I'm not arguing about that necessarily, but as I said, technically speaking, the 2001 manual calls for 0W30. Of course, you're right about M1 0W30 not meeting spec. For those reasons I went with Amsoil 0W30.

Then again, there are a lot of people still running M1 0W30 and I haven't heard of any problems specifically related to that oil. Who knows though. Everyone's gotta make their own decision I guess.

Default Question.....

- There's good data that shows that M1 0w30 is now no longer a full synthetic

Where have you read this? This is the first I've heard of this and I find it hard to believe. Yes, I know the formulations have changed in the past 6 months or so, but my understanding is that all Mobil-1 oil is still fully synthetic.

What part of the spec doesn't 0w-40 conform to?

Default Just that it's specifies 0W30 instead of 0W40. Of course...

...the prevailing argument is that 0W40 wasn't available at the time otherwise they would have put that in as the spec. So that's why many here run M1 0W40. I stuck with 0W30 because I found one that meets the spec and is supposed to be really good. But I'm sure M1 0W40 is fine too. I certainly don't have evidence to the contrary. I just figured if he was going to quote specs to the guy, he should at least be fair in saying that 0W40 isn't actually specified anywhere (at least not in any S4 manual I've ever seen).
