Default my brothers oil in his diesel truck never goes over 210F in 100k+(autometer gauge)

diesels are picky about oil because it controls the fuel injectors(somehow)

Default true, my car during normal highway driving doesnt hit above 80C, druing winter, it never goes above

65 degrees! Obviously, in stop and go traffic in the summer, I hit 90C and on the track around 100C.
I have no oil cooler btw.

Default I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of posting your comments

on the oil forum. These guys know more about oil than the average Audi tech. It will be interesting to see what they have to say.

oil

Default People can go down the wrong troubleshooting path when they don't understand how it functions.

That probably has little to do with this person's problem. Just a simple observation, that's all.

If you have a Mocal thermostatic adapter in your hand Troy, you'll understand how it works (and an oil cooler system) if you look hard enough. It's not what everybody seems to assume.

Doesn't the RS4 oil cooler open at 210F..maybe there is a reason.

Default RS4 oil coolers & temps. Answers for ?'s 1,3 &4...

1. Factory RS4 operational oil temps are around 116c to 118c (240F to 245F). Keep in mind the RS4 has 2 oil coolers.

The universal one, sandwhiched between the oil filter and the engine block...

and the additional oil/air intercooler, mounted beneath the main coolant radiator.

The universal one, ofcourse, is always operational. The oil/air intercooler doesn't kick in till the oil temperature exceeds 120c (248F). There is a thermostat built into the coolant/oil cooler that ensures there is a small flow of oil through the air/oil intercooler even when the car is stationary with the engine idling. Again, when the oil temperature exceeds 120c (248F), the thermostat opens to allow the full flow of stored, cool oil.

2. I'm not familiar with ACHtuning/DUH Engineering's thermostat set up. I guess I'll have to read up on it.

3. There's nothing wrong with the location of your oil cooler. So, maybe the problem is the thermostat.

4. As long as the thermostat(s) are set correctly and operational, the engine should be fine, regardless of load.

Good Luck,

E

Default First off oil water boils at 212 degrees F at sea level.

And if your thermostat is opening the valve at 175F your oil is definitely warm enough. I'm not sure were the temperature sensor is however on the S4 the oil on most cars generally cools before it hits the sensor. If there is fuel in your oil you have other problems that you should address before you start blaming your oil cooler. Most of the temperature stuff people spout off is FUD.

Question 1. The RS4 thermostat opens around 175F.

Question 2. I have no idea. You need to ask ACHTuning/DUH.

Question 3. This is a function of the thermostat not the core size.

Question 4. Yes the oil cooler is a good idea as long as you have a correctly working thermostat.

Default Yeah I'll have to take a look at it(its in a garage somewhere else at the moment).

This is the first I've heard of problems though, and like other's have pointed out->its not like gas and water have zero vapor pressure at 170F, with long enough drives they'd boil off. We'll see what the result is I guess once it is removed from the car.
