Default Oil Leak: was rear main seal, now cylinder head gasket.

So, after 7 (working) days of work on what I understood to be a blown rear main seal, I now find out after having just picked up my S4, that they in fact replaced the cylinder head gasket. So much for the original diagnosis. In any case, has anyone had, or heard of this being a problem before? Or am I just lucky enough to be the first? Also, being a non-techie when it comes to cars, do I need to be worried about the turbo's? Or did this work avoid them altogether?

TIA,
Lupy

Default Turbos good to go

Your lucky that it was a head gasket over a rear seal. Rear seals are tricky beasts to replace, head gakets being a little easier to repair.

Your Turbos should be fine, as they are upstream of your heads intake system, and unless fluids leaked into the exhaust protion (which would have been burned off) you should be good to go. Under warranty I hope?

Default Thanks, and yes... warranty = good : )

Funny thing was, when they originally diagnosed the problem the tech stated that engine oil was found to be inside the bell housing, which is what originally led them to believe it was the rear main. Would this be normal that oil leaking from the cylinder head could find its way down to the bell housing?

Default Got a replacement S4 due to a persistent oil leak/spray. 60 days in the shop overall.

Not fun. There have been 4 other cars in the Carolinas with this same problem and I have been in touch with 4 more owners(6 S4s and 2 A6 2.7t). All were out of service repediately for this. None of us have had a head gasket replaced to my knowledge - maybe they finally found the cause.

BTW, every single one of us was using Mobil 1 0-30 synth oil. Think the low weight oil found an Audi problem? Me thinks so. Ain't doin no 0-30 in the new S this time around...

Turbos and warranty OK. My other S felt healthier though - maybe psychological. This one is still before first oil change.
