The real benifet to a lighter flywheel is quicker engine response. The rpms will raise and drop much faster. I feel my VR4 is faster with it.
A dual mass flywheel does not hold up well in race applications. They are desinged to absorb vibration and shock. But under extreme conditions, I've seen them come apart. The RS4 flywheel is still a dual mass unit, so I don't see why it would matter much if you used it in place of the OE one. Has anyone had a flywheel failure yet?
I'm not positive, but more than likely, The RS4 flywheel is a slightly different weight, and balanced to suit the characteristics of the RS4 engine and harmonic balancer, but if it weighs about the same, how different can it be in terms of performance?
If you can replace the OE flywheel with a solid aluminum wheel, with a sintered iron insert, that would be a worth while investment. I believe SlvrbulletS4 had Altered Atmosphere make his.
I have a Fidanza flywheel, that is less than half the weight of the OE flywheel (11 vs 22 lbs). I do notice it revs better, although, it is easier to stall the car if your not paying attention because the engine does not have as much centrifical force at low rpms.
Does anyone make an aluminum flywheel yet for the S4? That would be worth doing.
