Okay ... which is faster STOCK ... an S4, or a '95 M3? How 'bout a '98 M3? Thanks.

Well, I think the S4 will win most of the time due to traction issues.
On the street, it's easier to hook up in the S4. So, it gets the big advantage. There are some real good running stock M3s out there, I just haven't run into them yet. I was able to pull on the ones I ran on the highway.
Also, the 95s are consistantly as fast as the 96 and up models. The 3.2l give it some more torque. So, I say
S4 vs. 95 M3...S4 whenever basically every time.
S4 vs. 98 M3...can go either way, but big advantage S4.

I have driven a 95 3.0 M3 coupe and a 98 M3 sedan.......and
They are both very fast cars. They dont make the torque down low like our cars....but they do have a magical sweet spot around 3500rpm when they "come on the cam" and just plain smoke upto redline.
I got the S4 over the M3 for two reasons....
1. Everyone and their brother has a M3 in the bay area.
2. For day to day driving, I prefer the low end torque.
I must say though.....the M3 kicks butt in the high rpm area....
Bottom line....all comes down to the driver.

If both cars were in the same condition, with perfect road conditions....
With the exact same driver driving both cars, it would be a tie IF it was a 98 m3 because in 97 they upgraded the torque on the m3's and that pushed 0-60 times to 5.5 with 1/4 mile in 14 flat. Before that they only had 227 lb.ft and 0-60 was only 5.7 with 1/4 mile in 14.2, in which case the s4 would then win.
