Okay, got a question about Xylene and Toulene....please help.....
So I found a place than can get me both for about the same price. I'd like to know which one would be a better choice. I searched the archives and most people seem to use Toulene even though Xylene has a higher rating at 117 octane and Toulene is 114 octane. So please tell me which you suggest and why. Thanks.

It all comes down to vapor pressure and thus temperature. Toluene boils at a slightly lower temp vs
Xylene. Thus if it is cool out and you are using a strong mix, the xylene will give driveablility problems. It is higher octane so you can use slightly less concentration in the mix. I seriously doubt that there would be any real differences regarding the solvency, etc. other than the boiling point issue. I would say go with Xylene in hot weather (80 F and hotter) and Toluene when it is colder than that.

Where can I get Toulene in SoCal?
I'm in NorCal right now for school but will be in SoCal for the summer. Where can I get it down there, anywhere in the L.A. area that sells large quantities? Where do you get it from? Thanks for the info.

Sorry, I'm no help for CA. Paint supply stores should have it in 5 gal cans, but it would be
cheaper if you could get a 55 gal drum and then hand pump it out into a "gas" can. Try using the search; I recall people talking about buying it in bulk in earlier threads. Good luck and remember - don't spill it on your paint!

Well, Toluene is considered a carcinogen by the State of CA, Xylene isn't...I'm pretty sure this is
correct. I wouldn't huff either one if you really care about brain cells. Methylene chloride smells better anyway...

$30 for 5 gallon container. Local paint store. I'm in Rohnert Park...
I got it today and they're looking into whether or not they can get 50+ gallon drums from their supplier. The paint store is called Hawley's.
