Default Opening up the ECU

How do I get to the back screw on my ECU? I can get the easy 4 screws, but it looks like I need to remove the piece around the wiper linkage as well as the easy to remove cowling.

Thanks,
Ken

Default If you just need to get at the ECU, don't worry about the 5th screw.

Pull up on the front of the ECU, like a clam shell. The cowl has some flex to it. You'll be able to reach in with a screwdriver to release the metal band over the ECU, and yank the ECU out. When you get the ECU 90% out of the weather box, you'll be restricted by the wiring harness, but at that point, you can release the wiring harnesses from the ECU and completely remove it.

Default Go to Sears:

Craftsman Ratchet Wrench ($10):

Combine it with an 8mm socket and I've been told it works well.

Default Doesn't that make it almost impossible to get the ECU out with out scratching either the ECU case or

the band clamp? If people are swapping ECUs for service, having a really scratched up ECU would seem to be evidence that the car was chipped. I know for me, I just took the fifth screw out once, and left it out. It really wasn't that tough to reach anyway.

1/4 inch craftsman drive and 8mm socket have always fit perfectly for me.

Default If that's your concern...it can be done without scratching anything.

Wrap the screwdriving in a rag before releasing the clip. Release the wiring harnesses before you yank the ECU out of the box (tough to do unless you've seen how they release...but once you know, you can easily do it with your eyes closed). You should be able to pry the weather box open far enough to pull the ECU out without a scratch.

Default I have no problem with a 1/4" ratchet and 8mm socket.

Did you remove the little clip on the wiper trim piece, just to the right of the ECU case??

Default What about reinstallation? You need to line up the marks on top of the ECU with the

clamp each time, I figured that would be tough to do with the case cover on.

Yeah, that would be impossible.
