Default OT but absolutely incredible aerial display by an Evo at Lake Superior Pro Rally.

Coming up over the hump at the top of Brockway Mountain Drive, this late model Evo (didn't catch the number to ID the driver) must've been airborne at least 100-125 feet if not more, bounced, and then was airborne for another 75 feet or so. About 20 feet from the edge of the road is a 150-200 foot cliff and I almost thought the driver was going to lose it but he did an incredible job of keeping it under control. The crowd went nuts. Anyone else here see that. Incredible!!!

Default This the same event as the old P.O.R (press on regardless) rally.?

Seems the P.O.R was run in the winter... Opps is it winter there yet?

Default Yes, same as POR....

And I wish I could be there right now....darn it!

I hate it when work gets in the way of rallying.

The same. Not winter yet (although we had it 2 weekends ago). Nice sunny day.

Default So, Daphne, can you give me a quick overview of the navigator's language...

I saw that long video you had a while ago, and heard you saying 1L, 3R, etc, etc.

Is that the distance and the turn, or the radius that you are referring to.

Curious Cat that needs to be brought back.

Default i've heard a few different forms of the navigation reading

some are really short giving distance to turn, the direction and severity... there was a ride along with McRae on speedvision and his co-driver gave him all sorts of stuff, like whether it was blind, a little jump, it it was a different surface, etc.. pretty detailed.

Default Sure...

The long video (the one where I say "You da man!" at the end) was from Cherokee Trails. This rally was run under FIA rules, which means that pace notes and recce were allowed. This is similar to how WRC events are run, so you might have heard me doing my Luis Moya (Carlos Sainz's co-driver) impressions.

Normally we run our events here "blind" meaning we are given a route book and are not allowed to pre-run the course. A route book page looks like this:

<img src="http://www.rallystuff.com/images/routebook.jpg">

Here you see what we call tulips along with mileages and a description if it's very tight, dangerous, etc. So normally you would hear me call out my interpretation of these tulips, and I usually classify a corner as Easy, Medium, Hard, Acute, Hairpin, T, or Sideroad.

You may also see !, !!, !!!. A single caution is a warning, a double a big warning, and a triple caution is something you darn right better slow down for because you will damage your car and yourself if you take it at speed.

At Cherokee Trails, we purchased pace notes because we were too lazy to skip work and do our own. ;-) These were created by some European guy with a fancy computer. Pace notes describe every kink in the road and also provide some instruction on how to traverse the road. Pace notes have far more instructions than a regular route book. Here is a page from my pace ntoes:

<img src="http://www.rallystuff.com/images/pacenote.jpg">

On the left you see the mileages from the start of the stage and in the middle are the instructions. Corners are classified, from hardest to easiest, as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. You also see Hairpins. So if I call a 1L, that means a very hard left that we better slow down for. A 3R is a 3rd gear right or a pretty fast one.

So this page I'm showing would be:

A short hairpin left. In 60 yards a short hairpin right, in 20 yards a short 4R into a short 2L(slow corner)inro 2r (slow) which tightens into a 3L...

The last line above the 1.66 (which is a mark from the route book and corresponds to the first instruction on the route book image I posted) says that the road surface turns to gravel. We have a slow 2R and we should keep inside into an off camber 3L which is half long... (Oh, I just remembered that stage...the pace notes don't tell you that you that the gravel is on a narrow downhill portion of the road...That sucked!)

I know, more info than you wanted, but you can see how cool pace notes are. We were actually slower with the pace notes because, well, sometimes it's better to just drive the road. It was cool, though.

Awesome. Looks like us pavement types have it a bit easier.

Default Ah, but I bet you have never heard the 3rd kind of navigation calls?

The one where a driver tries their hand at co-driver and calls a medium left but the road seems to go right?

Default Yeah, and, BTW, I was nice...

I cleaned the puke off my notes! ;-)

Scopalamine...don't leave home without it!

Actually, pavement is a whole different ballgame. The only thing rally teaches you that's applicable to track driving is the ability to remember every corner if you have to run it again....
