Default Over-filling oil: what to do?

Yesterday, while washing my car, I checked my oil and noticed that it was really low. Like barely registering on the dipstick low! I put a half quart in and the dipstick hardly changed. So I threw another quart in.

Later, after puzzling over this, I realized that I was parked on an incline and that I should re-check the oil level when I was parked on a flat surface. I did and, surprise, the dipstick was ringing loud and clear - there's plenty of oil in the engine.

Now I'm concerned about having at least a quart of oil too much in the engine. What are the implications? What should I do? Keep in mind I live in SF and don't have access to any ramps to drain it myself. If I go to a dip**** oil change place, can they be trusted to only drain a quart?

I've never had any oil burning or leaks over 130K miles of ownership, so the low oil really alarmed me.

Thanks

Default If there's too much oil, the crankshaft can whip it up into a foam which can cause issues.

I'd probably just do an oil change.

Default 3rd, not sure how much extra oil it takes for that to happen in our cars. It can also result in

high oil pressure.

Default Siphon some out..

go to Home Depot get a clear tube that will fit in the dipstick tube(about 8 feet of tubing to be safe) stick it down the dipstick tube and lay on the ground (since the oil pan is so low to the ground) with an empty oil bottle and suck until you see oil coming right for your mouth then stick the tube into the oil container. When full put your finger over the tube and lift to hood level to let remaining drain back into engine.

Let us know how it works.

Default As a general ruly, being largely overfilled can result in high oil pressure which can then help the

development of leaks by putting stress on various seals. Note that I'm not saying this happens from being just a bit overfilled.

Yes if there is TOO much, but is 1 QT. really too much? For peace of mind, go get an oil change...
