Default performance all-season tires?

I still have the stock Pirelli P6000 tires on my 2001 S4 Avant, but it's a matter of time before I'll need to replace them.

Even though I do have snow tires and rims, I'd like to have at least a modicum of mud and snow capability for my next set of tires. There are times when I need to drive up dirt (sometimes mud) roads to visit family and friends, plus there's the occasional time when I might encounter a bit of snow even in the summer (for instance, at the top of the Rockies in Colorado when traveling).

The P6000 tires are hazardous in any snow.

Any thoughts about a good performance tire that has at least a bit of all-season capability?

If there's an FAQ that I missed, please feel free to point me in its direction.

TIA.

Default Michelin Pilot Sport A/S!

I used it this Winter, and they were decent in snow and ice conditions. They are decent in dry and wet pavement as well.

They are not as good as regular Pilot Sports in dry, but certainly a world of difference in snow conditions.
Almost as good at Pilot Alpins in Winter driving.

Default Pilot Alpin is a dedicated winter/snow tire. Try Dunlop SP5000's, SP Sport A2's or Sumitomo HTR+'s

Default I agree...the Pilot Alpins cover all you ask a tire to do

Plus they wear very well...if not swapping between summer and winter wheels & tires...I would stick w/ the Alpins myself

Default Have you driven on Pilot Alpins in the snow, nene? My buddy in his S4 couldn't follows me down ....

unplowed fire roads with 6-10" of snow to our winter home in upper michigan with the Pilot Sport A/S's, getting stuck every 10-200 feet. I eventually left him (never had an issue) stuck and went 20 miles in to get our montero to literally tow him in.

This real world test proved to me that the Pilot SPort A/S were not even close to the Pilot Alpins.

Default I had them both this Winter!

I had the Pilot Alpins on the 17" Avus, but once I went with the Brembos, I could no longer use 17" wheels.
So I decided to go with the Pilot Sport A/S for the Winter on 18" wheels.
I did not try 10" of snow. I tried it at most 4", and I had no issues, downhill or uphill.
I tried it on ice as well, and it was good.

Default Umm, they are not rated for sustained driving at over 55 Fahrenheit!

If he were to ever run into 80-90F weather and run 80mph with a a fully loaded car, he might be looking at tire failure.

Ask teh ralley guys about this. Many ralley teams run pilot alpins for mud/gravel/asphalt stretched, and they have had serious problems with high speed driving in hot weather.

Flat out, they are winter tires and the comound is NOT designed for driving in hot weather.

Call Michelin if you want, but they'll tell you the same thing.

Default They are not bad (A/S), but in real world same time testing, the Alpins were the difference between

being stuck or not!
