sure hope not...
================================================== ===============
SYMPTOMS OF FIRST GEAR FAILURE
================================================== ===============
How can I tell if I have the problem?
A description of the symptoms in a '95 S6, with 56,000 miles on the odometer.
The noise began as a very faint tic, tic, tic noise - but just when beginning to move in 1st gear when the car was cold and when it was 20F or 25F degrees outside. Sort of like the noise you made as a kid by putting a playing card into the spokes of a bicycle, but not that loud. Since it was cold, of course the windows were rolled up.
I dismissed the noise, as perhaps being due to something that oil had not yet reached, because once I would shift into 2nd for a few feet, and then back into 1st - the noise would be gone. I would only hear it on the first motion ... when I would be traveling at 2 or 3 MPH in a parking lot with very light throttle.
Anyway, by the time I had driven another 2000 miles, the noise was quite apparent, particularily if I would drive away with the windows rolled down. On disassembly, the damage to 1st gear was quite apparent. The rubbing surface of one tooth on the mainshaft was very badly galled away.
sure hope not...

lemmmmmon!....no clue man! have you tried changing the tranny fluid?
maybe go to amsoil 75W90 series 2000 synthetic...could help when cold..still, a periodic click sound is very disappointing.....but is yours periodic? or does it click/chirp, then go away? fast or slow engagement? only happens upon initial attempt, then after tranny is warm, it goes away?

Hey mike, wanna be the tester for the porsche front diff swap?
hehe, well it's their rear diff, but it'd be our front.
-------------------
The Porsche 968 has a version of the 2WD 01E transmission.
It looks like there might be some of the parts that would
interchange, if you were so inclined.
The 968 has this transmission in the rear of the car driving
the rear wheels, with a long torque tube affair connecting it
to the engine way up in the front. Interesting differentials
listed are:
950.332.053.00 40% ZF Limited Slip Differential
950.332.063.00 Torsen Differential
So if anybody has been looking for a front differential,
in an excess of something-or-other, here's your chance!
Before you spend money on this, check the ID/OD of differential
carrier side bearings to make sure this will interchange.
