Default Please discuss using summer tires in the winter (i.e. snow/inclemet weather) with this car.

I need new tires, and I want to get something that performs a lot better than what I have now (Avon M550 A/S). I'm considering the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs which are only ~$20 more per tire than my Avons. I am mainly curious to know if anyone has had any experience/luck running a summer tire in the winter. It's either those or A really high performance all-season.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

Default Summer tires in inclement weather on this car is no fun..BTDT. Even all seasons is hairy

Depending on where you live and how much bad weather you see, you may want to invest in dedicated winters.

No discussion needed, One set of summers, one set of snows. It's not worth going half way.

Default Even if you could get traction, you still can't stop the car as well. I almost rearended several

cars on the stock summer tires before I switched over to winter tires.

Default Bad idea. With quattro, you can go just fine, but quattro won't help you stop.

Every year with the first snowfall comes a rash of posts from people with banged up cars moaning that they should have bought snow tires instead of running summer tires.

Don't be one of them.

Default HORRIBLE idea. This car has basically ZERO traction with summer tires in the winter

even in just cold temps, without snow, ice, etc...

Default Agreed. Terrible idea. Might as well drive your car into a tree now and save yourself the trouble of

doing it in cold weather.

The compounds of summer tires turn into bricks in the winter. Winter tires are designed for the cold

Default I agree with everyone else. I've run summers for the past 2 winters and it makes for a white knuckl

experience nearly everytime you go out. If you can avoid the snow, then it may not be a terrible idea. I didn't have to drive far/often the last 2 winters so I managed fine. With my 80 mile daily commute, I won't risk it.

FWIW...I made a 70+ mile trip during the largest snow storm of the '06-'07 Winter season on F1 GSD3's. Decelerating and climbing hills were extremely difficult.

Default Thanks for the input everyone. I figured that would be the concensus but I wanted to hear everyone's

opinion.
