Default Please educate me on S4's

I currently drive a Jetta VR6, and previously a GTi VR6. I'm interested in purchasing an S4 for many reasons... mainly for a more refined, fast car that's easy on the eyes/ears to the execs at work who see me pull in the garage etc. I don't look to mod this car anymore than a chip and H&R coils as I had enough of the headaches associated with check engine lights etc. However, I am worried about the cost of ownership, ie reliability and cost of maintenece etc. I'd appreciate any and all input...

I just test drove one which you can read about here... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1248531

Default my S4 has been very easy to own---costs out of pocket have been

minimal, oil every 3k, trans service after 2 years (yes it a superior tip 8^)) im very finicky about my cars and this one has exceeded ALL my expectations. mine is AUDI certified which is good for 7 years 100K...so im not likely to chip it and lose my warranty, besides it has plenty of power for me. I recently even got a new wheel on warranty as one of my Avus wheels got a slight bend and then cracked...good luck in your search

If you're worried about the maintenance costs -- buy audi assured and don't chip it.

Default i bought the S4 after owning a 1998 jetta VR6...

best decision ever.

but, if you're worried about 'check engine' lights, i'd be wary about the chip. there's a lot of info on this site about the chips prematurely aging the turbos, especially since it'll give about 50 more horses, and you KNOW you ain't gonna drive it easy!

good luck.

Default Don't let the others get to you. People here forget that new members come in daily.

The car is fairly reliable for the street, more so than some of the nay-sayers here. If you track or drag race the car, then reliability decreases, substantially. Audi does have a history of having niggly issues (rocking seats, blinking radios, sqeaky clutch, etc) all that will tick you off one momment, but the car bounces back strongly to put the smile back on your face in other ways.

The best advice to give you piece of mind is use carfax, to check the history of a used car, and to get a VAG tool.

If you are some-what mechanically inclined, there is a lot you can do on the car yourself, in terms of repairs, to keep the costs down.

I have 60K on my car, and I have logged most issues in the user regestry. The biggest issue to date, has been front and rear rotors, that have been replaced numerous times (under warranty). There are some good after-market replacements at the momment, and ECS tuning has a good website with brake bits, and other replacement OEM and tuner parts.

I have an H&R suspension, and APR chip, among someother things. A short shifter would be your first mod, if you get a 6 spd (You'd better get a 6 spd!) Anyway, there is a lot of information here. Good luck, and happy motoring!

Default Hey Majik

I'm familiar with you from over on "the tex" and I also moved from a VR6 Jetta to an S4. There is a ton of info in the achieves so you would be well served to take some time to do some research. You're a Vortex veteran so I'm sure you already know the value of forum achieves.

The only real cost of ownership difference I've noticed is an increase in my gas bill each month. On average I use 1-2 more tanks a month vs. my old '95 GLX.

The link below will answer some of your other questions.
