Please help....intermittent boost loss

I experience a boost loss occasionally. It seems very sporadic, comes and goes....whooshing sound accompanied with loss of boost.
I have searched the archives and have determined one or a combination of the following may be causing it:
1) bad MAF
2) bad BPV's
3) torn TBB
What I am wondering about is the fact that when I experience the loss of boost, it is accompanied by a whooshing sound coming from the engine somewhere. Sounds like it may be on the driver's side as best as I can tell. The whooshing noise increases with increased throttle and sounds very similar to an AC unit. (Hard to describe but that's about the closet thing I can think of.) Is my car in limp mode or am I experiencing a boost leak? If it is a boost leak, why do I only experience the loss of boost on occasion and not all the time? It runs very strong and pulls great most of the time. I have checked all the hoses to the best of my ability and they seem very tight. I have not yet taken off the BPV's or the TBB to check them (replacing these anyway, so I figured I'd leave them on until I get the new parts).
Am I on the right track here or could it be something else?
Also - anybody in the Portland/Vancouver (WA/OR)area with a VAG?
Thanks.
(I know this is probably in the archives somewhere, but would like the reassurance that I am looking at the right items.)

wrong with your car DO NOT use a lot of throttle and boost until you have ruled out leaks, you will grenade your turbos over time.

checked for DTC's ? Do you have a pressure tester ? If not, get a pressure tester from AWE of make one. Most issues revolve around boost leaks or possibly bad MAF's if you have a 2000 S4.

Okay, but why is it so intermittent? Only happens sporadically. When the boost loss does occur, I drive like an old women and then it goes away. I can pretty much tell when the boost disappears and again when it returns. Frustrating to say the least. Also -- DTC's are???
Codes that can only be read by a VAG correct? I don't have a VAG so I am s.o.l...
