Default Please help: Old vs New ECU for S4

I have ordered a new ECU from APR with the modified chip code (so I can keep my stock unit for backup).
I did a quick check on the price of an ECU at Clair's (btw-it was the same as APR), they asked me

"Could you please supply me with the VIN number of your vehicle?
There is a early and late version for the year 2000."

Say what?

Does this matter? Will my S4 run both the old and new ECU versions?
Do I have to tell APR which unit I have so when they send the new one it will work in my car?

Please help if you know!

Default It does matter...

there *can* be several versions of ECUs. We always identify the ECU prior to a modified ECU. I'm sure APR can guide you, or just pull the numbers off of the current ECU and share them with Clair. Or as they said, just provide the VIN. Give us a call if you have questions (or just call APR, they are great guys). -Pete

Stratmosphere

Default the difference is actually in the software. I had D02 software in my origional ecu but (m)

inn the process of chipping it the vendors usually will upgrade this in the chip i think that the current is D03

Default also different ECUs depending on 6spd or Tip (m)

The last letter in the ECU part number indicates if it is for a 6spd (-A) or Tip (-B). But I was told that the only difference between the two is the "chip". So, if you were planning to replace the chip anyway, either ECU would work.

Default New ECU...

There has just recently been a VIN split on S4 6-spd. ECU's. Some of the very latest 2000MY cars may have a different ECU (which, according to our sources, will be same ECU that will be in the 2001MY initially). This ECU is so new that there are not any currently in the entire U.S. parts system.
