A 335 is equivalent to an S4 as a class of car? ok. I give up then.

Default Today, yes. RS4 competes with M3. S4 competes with 335. I even had an Audi marketing rep/
driving instructor tell me that at an Audi driving event.

Sucks. Used to be S4 to M3, RS4 to M3 CSL or nothing at all. Now what?

Default Better than the B5 S4 in stock form, yes, but don't kid yourself
I have over $20K in my E46 M3 with plenty of things left on the plate without even touching the engine.
