Default Poll: Definition of 10/10ths?

People tend to use x/10ths to define how hard they are driving, but this can be quite relative/subjective. My own opinion is that 10/10ths should 1) represent the car's capability not the driver's and 2) be the equivalent of averaging double the posted speed limit on a given public road (for a stock S4). 5/10ths would then be driving the speed limit. Does this sound about right?

Default 10/10 should be driver ability given the conditions...

When we rally, going all out (as fast as we can go) is called 10/10. If we almost roll, we were going 11/10. If we roll, we were going 12/10. If we find ourselves upside down in a river with the car filling with water, we were going 13/10. When we just want to finish and the car is about to fall apart, we go 8/10.

Default How about 2nd point then.

Where I drive, assuming you could close the road down to the public (but you must still stay in your lane), I think I could just about avg. double the speed limit and am confident that a better driver could easily do it in a stock S4.

Default That's why I added the "conditions" part of it

For example, at Sno*Drift (Snow and Ice rally) we were driving at least 10/10 (more than that when we went into the snow banks...) on VERY icy roads. From the in-car you can see that we weren't going all that fast - certainly not 2 x the speed limit. But we still managed to find the upper end of a few snow banks.

Frankly at a rally when you're driving on closed dirt roads, we're probably doing 3x the limit, but given the car (roll cage, suspension, etc.) and driver, that's probably not 10/10.

It all depends on the driver, conditions and vehicle. And I would NEVER bomb down a dirt road, closed or not, at high speeds in a vehicle that was not set up with the proper safety equipment. That's just asking for trouble.

Default When I use that term...

...with my friends I mean that I was driving the car all the way to its limit for current road conditions. So I don't include the driver's capability.

If you barely make it around a turn with all four tires squealing and you can feel that you're right on the edge of traction, and if you had a perfect line through the corner, then I would say you took that corner at 10/10. Regardless of the driver, you couldn't have pushed the car harder.

If you take every corner at 10/10 and you take every straight in high revs and WOT followed by full-on ABS braking to set up for the next corner, with good clean transitions, then you're driving 10/10.

I don't personally know anyone who drives like that.

Default Speed limit has nothing to do with it...

10/10 means that you are at your limit and the car you drive is at its limit. Anything more can bring potential problems.

Anyone can drive triple-digit speed on the straight, doing that in a tight turn takes skill.

Point 1 is the standard definition, but conflicts with Point 2, given cars' different capabilities

Default 10/10ths is really a description of ones ability to comprehend . . .

what is occurring while driving. Often called "driving over your head" it means you are purely reacting to the situation and no longer have the ability to anticipate. Driving without the benefit of a properly functioning brain. The senses are literally overwhelmed. You ask a driver who has been driving "over their head" about the last lap and they often will not be able to tell you much at all about the lap. Most often they will say "I was really flying huh?" In most cases they will have been slower. It feels fast cuz they were excited and their memory of the laps in question is poor. You drive at 8/10 ths so you have one tenth to comprehend what is going on and the other tenth so you can actually remember what happend.
