I recently went to the drags and jammed 3rd gear for a final time, as both 3rd/4th refused to go back into gear. I picked up a used tranny from a '00 A6 2.7T and put it in over the weekend with the help of DAP. I was happy to see that the donor car was a tan A6, because nobody drives a TAN A6 aggressively ;-) It took just under 5 hours to get the engine/tranny out of the car, a couple hours to switch over the transmissions, and then just under 5 to put it all back together. Dave and I had each pulled our engines twice this year, so by now we're pros and it went quite well ;-)
The only catch along the way was that the reverse sensor on the A6 2.7T is different than the S4. The sensor housing has a different mounting location that a shifter linkage bolts into. The S4 linkage wouldn't mount to the A6 sensor housing, so we swapped sensor housings and all was well.
I now have all 7 gears back and I'm very happy. I figured it'd be a good idea to press my luck and go to the drags on Wed night... hey, I have ~9 gals of 104oct just begging me to use it up

not sure just yet. I'd really like to open it up and work on it, but I'm not sure what tools I really need to invest in to do the work properly.

Note the minor difference which I assumed was just a documentation error. I looked at all years ('00-'04) A6 2.7T and they all list 0.987, while all years ('00-'02) S4 list 0.967. I find it quite strange if they'd really put such a small difference in gear in one gear in this otherwise identical tranny. So, again, I assume it's a documentation issue. At some point I'll log gear/speed/rpm to see if it matches my older logs, though I might not be able to capture such a small difference anyway - we'll see.
