Default Q: 02 S4 "wet rattle" sound from driver's front tire area????

Hi,
This noise just came up last week and has resurfaced this morning in earnest. I'm taking my Audi to the dealer tomorrow for a diagnosis but would like your opinion.

I first noticed it driving out of my apt complex.

* The sound sounds loudest near the front driver's tire area
* It sounds pretty much like a plastic box with pebbles and a little water rattling inside.
* The sound is quite audible when the car is moving in a straight line <5MPH (you can jog beside the car and hear it).
* It doesn't become more audible when you turn (sounds the same) or when you go backwards (sounds the same).
* There is no sound when the car is at rest.
* Revving the engine doesn't change the sound at all (only movement).
* The car "feels" the same (no pulling one direction when you brake, no wobbliness when you are driving on the hwy, etc.)

What could it be? Is it the CV boot? I think I had my CV boots go out on my Honda (or maybe it was the joint) but IIRC, the Accord only made noise when you turned.

Thanks in advance,
-g

I used to think it was just when the car was cold but apparently this sound is always present when you are dri

What kind of wheels? Could be loose center caps?

Default That would be my guess...except...

I was thinking water or pebbles stuck inside the centercaps. If it's an aftermarket wheel, I would yank off the wheel, and take a look behind the centercap for debris. If it's an OEM wheel, remove the cover and have a look (no need to pull the wheel).

They are stock wheels. I'll check that this afternoon.

Default A: Haha! Apparently a BOLT came entirely loose behind the center cap...

At lower speeds, the bolt was rattling in the center cap area and would bounce off the plastic center cap. At higher speeds, centrifugal force would keep the bolt "stuck" to the side of the wheel (like the old carnival ride Gravitron).

Since all of the other nuts on that wheel were nice and tight *and* I haven't rotated the tires in a couple months, I find it strange that only ONE of the nuts would have fallen off.

Personally, I think one of my friends was messing with me. Perhaps I'm paranoid but this is EXACTLY the kind of stuff I would do to me if I had thought of it first and wanted to annoy me.

Needless to say, I checked all the other bolts.
