Default Question concerning engine cold start (anyone know?)...
What exactly is the engine doing when it (at first) idles around ~1200 rpm and then slowly falls to ~800? I realize it is some sort of "warm up" but what is it technically doing and what is it tying to accomplish?

i think its warming up the Cats something like that, i might be wrong

Default standard high idle - the higher rpm with almost zero load helps to get the oil moving
it has nothing to do with the cats. you'll notice that nearly all cars manufactured in the last 20 years have had some similar feature

Default Does that to improve cold-start emissions. Exhaust is very dirty before the cats "lite"...
...so they raise the engine rpm to get heat into them as quickly as possible.
