Default Question of legality...

I was looking at european style plates for my S4. I live in new york.. and.. I know that our DMV is run by a bunch of ****'s, so they're prolly not legal.. Anyone know the law on the plates?

Default They are an accessory ... you still must display state issued tags.

Many people living in states requiring front plates run a Euro plate instead ... but that's technically "illegal".

Default Even if the Euro spec plate carries my NY issued plate Number?

Or.. is it up to the judgement of the officer stopping you?

And.. how many officers would bother pulling someone over for that?

Default You cannot use the Euro plate as a substitute for state issued plates ...

... even if they have the same "numbers".

Default Not necessarily

depending on the state, all that is technically required may be that the numbers/letters appear on the front of the vehicle. In OH for example, you can have a euro plate as long as the letters/numbers match the OH-issued rear plate (according to the OH revised code this is all that is required--according to someone who has a front euro plate and has gotten out of front-plate citations)

Default Re: Question of legality...

its illegal to have the euro plate on but ive have seen in the past someone put a euro plate infront of the car and then a ny plate ontop of it and that is legal i believe.... however it looks ugly. I got a euro plate on my imola S4 that says "2RIP" (anyone who has seen the movie boiler room would appreciate it)and have not been stopped yet for it.
