Can anyone explain to me the intricacies of boost? Is boost a function of RPMs? Does it rise with an increase in RPMs and thus lower when switching to a higher gear? Are there ways I can control it? Thanks!

on a few magazine subs, they have good info on this.
Also a search on yahoo will keep you reading till you pass out.
Then, buy some good books about turbo charging.

use your right foot...
or...
get a boost controller... (though even if ya did, i'd hestitate at deviating far from requested boost)
(flame away)
=)
oh yeah... if ya have a boost controller control
boost you lose functionality of the ecu to control
boost in cases where yadayadablahblahblah blow yada
turbo yadayada wastegate go boom blahblahblah you go

Boost allows more air to be pumped into the combustion chambers thus allowing more fuel to be added to the mixture for a bigger bang.
Boost is not related to RPM but is managed by ECU based among other things on the engine load.
For ex if you are lugging the engine going 10mph uphill in third gear the turbos may come on to help out.
Install a boost gauge and watch it under different driving conditions. You will be in vacuum most of the time going into boost only under hard acceleration or engine load conditions described above.
I am not sure what you are asking for as far as controlling the boost. If you are looking for manual controller, I would let the ECU handle it. If you would like to adjust your driving habits to say stay off boost when the car is cold, don't do sudden accelerations or lug the engine.
