while i think S4's are partially responsible for the recent resurgance in interest for a fast 4 door car(and AWD)...sleeper was its name....not these fast less expensive cars though...
obviously i'm talking about
EVO (lancer/mirage)
WRX/WRX STI (impreza)
neon SRT-4 (neon)
will these cars inspire more manufacturers to do teh same...keep in mind we have always had reltively quick econobox based cars(civic SI's, GTI's etc), but not cars like these will stick a huge middle finger up at the performance oriented luxury market...something thats not been done in teh past in large numbers except by dedicated =sports/pony cars (camaro, mustang, etc)...

I think that trend is going to continue tho. THe sunies are all getting the 2.5 liter turbo engine. Albeit not as potent as the STi, still nice. The romurs in hondaville are hybrid AWD cars with electronic motors adding about 100-150 hp to either the front wheels of the NSX and the rear of the accords (already with 240 up front.

I'm a big fan of the STi -- our rally car is a 4th gen STi, but you can't get around the fact that its a cheap car with expensive stuff bolted on. It feels like it when you're in them, no matter how well they drive or how fast they are.

hate to generalize but those I've seen with the EVO's STR-4's and STI's are not the best drivers, young and with something to prove it seems. I've seen some pretty stupid things on the roads.

Not that demand for cult vehicles like th STi and Evo haven't been around in the US, manufacturers are only now finally giving us what the rest of the world has long had and valued ... inexpensive (econo) sedans with go-fast goodies bolted on from the factory.

the last SRT-4 i saw was up to no good doing the weave ata bout 95mph or so....
haven't seen too many EVO's, and STI's ont eh road...well, i see them almost everday parked at a perfromace parts store i passs on teh way hoem from work...but not ont eh road so much..the EVO was behaving when i saw it.
though, my freind who is not a repsonsible driver (already drives likea crazy sometimes in his 330i) IMO is itching to dump his bimmer for an EVO.

those companies feeling out the market in the US. If they do well, as they appear to be doing, I would expect them to be here for the long haul.
