Default Rant du jour - I really dislike ESP

Driving to work this morning - a little spirited, but hey, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Sideroad left with a little bump. Accelerate out of the turn after going over bump. Suspension is pretty extended on the passenger side during the turn. Car then starts to settle in it's classic wallowing suspension mode (I need coilovers...Todd!) and ESP kicks in. As you may know, ESP grabs you by an ear, gives you a stern lecture regarding your driving, and spanks you while warning you to never again do whatever it is you did to get the car a bit out of sorts.

What could have been a nicely executed turn/blast down a fun road was ruined by ESP. And the upcoming set of sweeping turns is my favorite part of the drive. :-( I really have to remember to turn that system off before taking that turn.

Has anyone actually found ESP usefull?

Default It's useful to me, if it prevents someone else from losing control and hitting me..

I think it's a great idea and it can be shut off. I think most drivers suck and I rather cars be built to correct thier drivers mistakes. As long as it can be shut off it's a great idea...

Default The only time I like it...

...is when it's snowing. I wish I would have had it in my A4 in December when I smacked the curb...it might have saved me a wheel bearing replacement.

BTW - I've gotten in the habit off turning off ESP, unless the roads are wet/snowy/icy. I do the same with ASC in the M3. 8^)

Default At slow speeds( under 40mph) I hate it, however if I were to

overcook it at 60 plus on a public road, I think I would appreciate it, as would my "fellow travellers".

Default Craig, do you find the ASC intrusive? The only time I think I've ever felt it was...

when I pulled some mad fishtailin' action when blasting around a corner through a rather large puddle on bald-*** tires (smart move, I know). I must say it worked very well (tucked the tail back in rather quickly). Did you ever find that it cut in at the wrong time?

Afterwards I thanked the car. Thanks, I needed that! ;-)

Default The only time I notice it...

...is when I hit some water, sand or gravel in a turn. It pretty much shuts the power down. The first time it happened in my Z3, I thought something broke. 8^)
