Default Really stupid question about ECU upgrade..please bear with me

If you're getting a new ECU from say APR...couldn't you just use the one you pull out in the first place as your stock replacement one? I don't quite understand this here...

Default That's what I understand they do.

If you the chip and a spare ECU, it is my understanding that APR puts their chip in the new ECU. The new chipped ECU is sent to you and your spare ECU is actually the stock ECU that came with your car.<p>Brett Gissel

So it's like a core charge or something?

Default it's two prices...

one charge for the 'spare ECU' (which allows you to keep the one that came in your car as a spare, which is what I did) and another charge for the
programming (which would be the same charge if you ordered a 'spare ECU' for them to program and send you, or if you sent them yours for reprogramming). I like having the stock as a backup just in case.
Now I want to get VAG-COM so I can clear the code that indicates 'power restored' or whatever the
actual meaning is (which would clue a dealer you
have possibly a chipped ECU, I'm told some dealers don't look for this code during servicing but why take the chance.<p>David Bishop

Default I have an APR chip and ECU. You can keep the stock ECU as a spare. (more)

The APR chip is soldered into the ECU. You can send in your stock ECU and they will solder the chip in, or you can order an ECU with the chip from APR and use your stock ECU as a spare.
