Default Reckless Driving for donuts in a parking lot

So, long story short, about 5 friends and I are in a big (about 1/4 mile by 1/8th mile) empty (and I mean NO cars at all) parking lot near Dulles Airport in VA doing donuts, etc. for about 10 minutes, when I decide to park my S4 and get in my friend's 4Runner. About 5 mins later a cop rolls into the lot, the other 4 cars get away but my friend in the 4Runner gets pulled over and gets a ticket for "Reckless Driving in a Parking Lot".

Seems kind of harsh to me - don't you have to be endangering someone else to get reckless? Anyways my friend's court date is in 1 month and any advice on how to get out of it or get it reduced by those familiar w/ such matters would be helpful.

TIA

Default Was it snow covered? Seems silly to get a reckless for a snowy parking lot.

But if it were a bare pavement type deal, then I can see him citing you for that. I'm guessing it was snow covered considering a 4Runner was doing donuts

Good luck to your friend....maybe the judge will let him off since he was just enjoying an empty, snow covered parking lot.

Default Maybe say you were practicing skid control? Back when I did driver's Ed in highschool, instructors..

took us into icy parking lots to practice skid control, and recommended we find empty lots to practice ourselves. Better there on purpose than on the road by surprise (might work?)

Default I once had my keys and driver's license taken away from me for doing donuts and it was 8 deg outside

There was no other cars in the area. I was not endangering anyone and I was pissed.

Did he admit to f'in off? Is his statement written on the ticket? If not, it'll get tossed.

Default Private property?? Cop can only give Reckless, DUI, and parking in Handicap spot ticket in VA..

So his only option was to let you go or give you reckless...DARN VA cops..

Default I was in my friends grand cherokee and the same thing happened. He was able to get out of

the reckless ticket because we were on private property (some corporation) where the cops had no jurisdiction. The judge changed it to trespassing which saved him a few hundred bucks (we all split the fine) and getting points on his license.

We were in Virginia too about 10 miles away in Arlington. All of us but the driver had been drinking so 3 cars rolled up and it was a big scene. They had him doing all kinds of sobriety tests which was pretty amusing cause we knew he was sober.

He didn't even get a lawyer he just went to court and the judge lessened the infraction. Based on the post below I guess it was lucky but look into it I am not sure what the VA law is.
