That always-on instrument light finally got me. I was pulling out a well lighted shopping plaza. A police car coming towards flashing his lights. My right brain checked the panel light and told me "you're fine, must be someone else" until he yell at me in a not so nice way. I must look like a total idiot.
Anyone with similar experience, is there a way to reprogram this?

I had the same thing happen, except that I had the switch in only the first position (parking lights), so I in fact was looking at the little green icon indicating that the lights were on. My cop, fortunately, was relatively polite...
My '95 Ford Taurus SHO (which I sold to get my A4)had an auto on/off switch for the headlights, and you could adjust how dark it would need to be before the lights turned on. I believe that this was a relatively common feature in the Ford fleet. Of course, with the Ford, you knew when your lights were off because the dash wasn't lit all the time, which is just the opposite of the Audi.
I didn't see anything in the A4 manual indicating that this feature existed, but I could have missed it.

Julian
