Hello all,
I had a bit of an adventure today heading up to Reno from Santa Cruz. On top of the fact that 80 was chains/snow tires & 4WD required just east of Truckee, I got a flat somewhere along the way. It took me about 5 hours to get from Loomis to Reno due to the fact I have no snow tires and the stock Pirelli tires (with 17K of mostly hard driving) make great skis. Can you say absolutely no traction. Most of the way I was going about 20 mph. I sure wish I didn't have to take my mom to the doctor at 8 AM, I would have stayed with friends in Roseville and made the rest of the trip in the morning.
Blah blah blah...
Anyway, thanks to the snow and ice I didn't notice the vibration from the flat till I got close to Boom Town. By the time I got to the gas station and inspected the tire.. Well, I'll just say I've never seen a tire that jacked up that didn't come off the wheel, the damn thing was nearly smoking. Ug, changing a flat in 29 degree weather is no fun. Especially when you've been up since 6:30 AM and it's now 5:30 AM the next morning.
So I need 2 new tires by Sunday, when I head home. What's the best place to get a set of S-03's (or perhaps you have some other recommendations) up here in Reno, anyone? How much should I expect to pay for tires, mount & balance? Will the mixed rubber adversely effect the driving characteristics (ie do I really need 4 rather than 2)? Should I put the new ones up front or in the rear?
On a positive note, I LOVE MY CAR! The s-car trudged through the elements like a champ despite the lack of snow tires on closed roads.
I really appreciate your help folks... going to bed, er, passing out now, only to get up in 45 minutes... ZZZzzzzz
