Default Revisiting the Oil debates - Mobil 1 15W50 - "designed for high performance"

From the Mobil 1 web page:

Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic Formula 15W-50:
Flows at -48°C (-55°F), pumps at temperatures as low as many conventional SAE 5W-30 oils.
Provides superior high-temperature protection for high-performance and high-revving cars. (emphasis mine)

Also:

Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic Formula 15W-50 is especially suitable for high-performance cars, particularly hot-running or heavily
loaded vehicles and special high-tech imports.

S4 is high performance, high-revving, no? Turbos are especially hot-running, no? Seems like 15W50 should be fine, so long as you don't go to the arctic circle or anything... Anyone have any other sources of information?

thing is when you start the car up cold, that stuff is pretty darn thick, which is bad for turbos

Very thick for the turbos, but shouldn't it be alright, if I you let the car warm up every time?

Default My #1 concern is heat. Wouldn't the Mobil 1 5W30 or 40 be best for this sort of application?

Remember, I am using the 0w30 right now.

Default just my 2 cents...

porsche uses 15-50 in their new cars, and recommends it. i used it in the summer for a while in a previous car i owned (a somewhat high perf. italian car) and noticed that the car had less power with the heavier weighted oil, which is logical i guess, but certainly not ideal, so i went back to the original grade.
if anything, b/c of the turbos, i would only go as high as a 10, cold weight, and a 40, hot weight- 10 b/c of the need for the turbs to get lubed asap, and 40 b/c of the power robbing qualities (and fuel mileage gets worse too) of the 50. as far as heat goes, if i lived in abu dabi i still wouldn't go higher than a 40 weight...
that's just my 2 cents, i'm no expert, just talking from experience...

I can't find synthetic oils that meet ACEA 2 or 3 specs, what gives?

Default intreresting question though, PLEASE READ?

if it's SO BAD to use 15-50 Mobil 1

why does Porsche use it on the 996tt (which has KKK turbo's on it)

I would be surprised if anyone could prove that the BEARING section of a K03

and the K16 or K24 (whatever the 996tt uses) were any different, in there tolerances

hmmmm

Food for thought

but hasn't one of the problems w/ the S4 been the turbo oil lines being too small???
