With rising gas prices, I wonder if any chip tuners have considered creating an 87 octane program

Default I already limit my lunch expenditures. That's not in question here.

And I'm usually running the stock chip. With all of the selectable chips being offered today (APR and GIAC), I'm wondering why not explore an 87 octane program as one of those selections.

If the manual says not to run below 91, I'm not expecting the stock chip to compensate. If someone wants to try it, I'd love to see it, but I'd rather see some programming optimized for 87 first.

I don't think anyone in my area even knows about Lemmi. ;-)

Default oh, i know.

I drove a 93 Accord for up to 215k and I got great mileage. As far as modding the **** out of them; if you know what you are doing you can usually increase the mileage. When my Hatch was stock with its concrete ripping 70 hp, I could not get any better than 38 MPG. After putting in the LS motor I could squeeze out 41. While the new engine still only had 142 hp, it would turn 14.9's. Respectable for 41mpg.

Sorry, I am touchy on this subject.

It always seems that people that ask about fuel mileage are brushed off because they should be able to "afford" the fuel. I don't see a problem with trying to save a few bucks. The man asked a question about a chip, not for a suggestion on another vehicle.

Default To me it's no different than walking into a gas station and hearing SUV owners

balk at the cost of filling up. I look at them an laugh...because they bought the wrong car if fuel economy was a priority. I understand the desire to save money where you can...but if fuel economy is a priority, start with the right car...THAT'S where you'll really start saving. If performance is your priority, don't obsess over the fuel economy.

Some people want their cake and want to eat it too...I guess I just don't want to hear about it.

Default haha :) no mr. slave tuning? It's probably your cheapest method though, other than logging stock

and seeing if it compensates.

Default wait wait wait...i'm assuming most of yoru LONG AZZ commute is highway...how are you only doing

only 19.5mpg in the S4? On the highway I get about 25mpg in the S4 if i drive like a normal person. Its the local trips and occasionaly WOT that bring my average down to 20-21 or so.

Default This is different. SUVs can often get away with 87 octane AFAIK.

We're required by Audi to use 91 octane. I'm wondering if there's a way to get down to 87 via chip tuning.

Keep in mind that this isn't any permanent mod that I'm talking about. Just something that the chip tuners may want to explore as a selectable option for when extra power isn't needed.

I know what I bought 4 years ago, and I still enjoy it very much. I get 7 mpg at the track and don't bat an eyelash, because I'm using all of the available power there. Around town, I don't need all of the power, so why not consider a way to maximize fuel economy at the time?

Default That's just what I average. Highway at 80-85mph yields me maybe 22-23, but

around town and WOT brings down that average. I'm sure I hit WOT and 6k+ RPMs every day - this is a fun car and I enjoy using all of it that I have available - The way a car should be driven

As you can see from my site:
- I averaged 19.6 mpg for the first 44678 miles I had the car. That was a mix of bone stock (20k) with APR Stg2+ (24k).
- Then there's some missing data, then I restarted the averaging at 65747 miles after going full Stg3. From 65747 to 100123 (35k), I also averaged 19.6 mpg while Stg3. I stopped recording after 100k ;-)

So it seems that ~19.6 is just where my car is for the average driving I do with it. These are large data samples and even show varying power mods. The result is it all averages out the same.

Are you actually calculating your mileage, or just trusting your trip computer? Maybe your mileage is lower than you think? Maybe my car just gets worse mileage? Maybe the Avant gets worse mileage? Maybe my constant speeds of 80-85 are higher than ideal, and thus I could get better around 60? Bunch of possibilities, I guess.

Also, looking at my fillups while I was stock (first 20k), the best tank I had was 22.3 mpg, just FYI. Note, there is one tank in there that is higher, but if you look at the %err, it would suggest that that fillup didn't fill up the car fully, and thus is invalid.
