Ross-Tech VAG-COM and chipping

I just tried the Ross Tech VAG-COM for the first time and I had a suggestion for all of you who bought a new ECU with your chip so you could put the stock ECU in when you get your car serviced. I think that it has been mentioned on this forum befor but every time you change the ECU it generates an error code that the dealer reads on their diagnostic computer. With the VAG-COM software and cable you can reset this error code in about 60 seconds so there will be no indication that the ECU was ever changed.
I didn't get to spend much time playing with the VAG-COM but I did notice that I had at least 2 error codes. One from the lock system that indicated some sort of error with the trunk lock. The one I was a bit more interested in was an error code that said something about intermitent boost pressure error. I reset the code to see if it would show up again but I have not driven the car since so I don't know what will happen.
Anyway, the VAG-COM seems like a bargan at $200 and I would get one just for the ability to check and reset error codes, but you can also recode the computers in the car(locks, radio, etc.)and eventually it will be able to read data blocks and other things.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com">http://www.ross-tech.com</a</li></ul>

Is its operation fairly straight forward or do you need to spend another $100 on the service manual?

If you just want to erase trouble codes (DTCs), or reprogram your central lock controller using the Audiworld FAQ, you don't need the manual.
If you want to know how to code other modules, or to know what is in the data blocks, or almost anything else, you need the service manual.
