The fitment issues and minimally improved size are the biggest issues. The aluminium endcaps are there only real benifit, and they have 2 cons -OEM means high price regardless of performance, and the fitment issues. I would say you would be better off spending 100$ more, or trying to talk the guy who wants $900 for his used ones down to match this RS4 price.

you didnt specify you werent looking to upgrade necessarily, just replacing faulty stock units, in which case it is waayyy too much money. if upgrade is not important buy some ones stock intercoolers that are in working condition just not being used because someone DID upgrade. or find a company making ICs with aluminum end tanks, chances are the core size will be better than stock incase you want to upgrade other componants in the future. plus you didnt say if your $795 ICs come with shrouds or piping, or if its just the core and end tanks. but im pretty sure i found the set your talking about on ebay.

Just tossing this out there, not trying to hate on RS4 ICs. Also not saying it is a good idea or is better than RS4s.
The stock ICs can be modified to reduce the chances of the end cap failure. Fastest way would be to use some (alot of) epoxy to help hold down the fingers into a one solid mass of aluminium and hard epoxy resin making it less likly for them to loosen over time. The advantage to this is they are still cheap as you can get used ones, and the fitment is easy as pie. However they could still blow a cap as well, but the chances should be reduced.

RS4's would be good for a chipped K03 setup but $700 is way too much, there pretty much outdated. You could def pick up some used AWE's for that. Im not saying that rS4's are trash but i wouldnt pay anything over 450 for them.

Look man, i have done my research and you are taking this way too far... I have heard bad things on the cx racing intercoolers, and the IPP intercoolers. So they are out. I've heard that the rs4 intercoolers only work slightly better than the stocks but are all alluminum. I don't know why i would put stock ones in again as i'm sure i would just eventually have the same issue again. And as i'm not one to put a bandaid on something that is not an option. I didn't say is $795 a good price for rs4 intercoolers with shrouds, i simply just said for intercoolers. Please stop junking up my post.
And to everyone else who posted what they got their new/used ones for, thank you. I think i'm going to wait and see what i can find used... or if anyone has some to sell???
