Had a little business over the mountains of NC/TN yesterday, and on the way back a 540i (~97 vintage, auto) came up on me fast. He was using me as radar shield for a while, and then I put a little space between us. He then gets in front and decides he wants to play. So from a good 80 he rolls on the throttle and starts to walk away. He snuk about two car lengths in before I caught on, so I rolled on it in 6th, and his gaining was no more. Until he nailed it. Then I hit 5th and slowly made ground, until we were both doing about 120, at which point I was about four car lengths ahead. All of you who know, 120 on I-40 through the NC-TN border is not easily doable. We were on the straightest stretch that existed for about 10 miles, but at times it got a little scary. No one was around, which surprised me.
The next two rolling starts were from lower speeds (~70), and I was in fourth, so it wasn't even that close. He had 30 day tags on his car, and wasn't that good of a driver anyway. At one point I disappeared around a turn and the car was really digging in and I thought 'uh oh, this guy might not make this one' but he did, good thing.
I was actually surprised that I pulled out so well, b/c at the time it was 93degrees and I had a/c on, he must have also.
Not a very exciting story, but if you're ever in the area I highly suggest BLASTING along that road, it's an experience. The whole stretch from the French Broad River in TN to Asheville is a nice piece of work. We also passed an S2000 towing a wheel trailer for the autocross I was at later. He said he heard me coming before he saw me, and he was sorry he couldn't play sine he was towing something. Props to the VM1!!
