Could always supercharge a 2.8L 30 valve to get around 300hp.

if you want to save money up front and mod, just get the 1.8T
I wouldn't get the 2.8 if you want to mod it to compete with an S4. Just get the S4 or don't. If you get the 1.8T and decide to mod it, be realisitic about what you'll have to do to run with an S4 and what you'll have to sacrifice.

Having owned a 2.8 A4 before the S4...
I had a 2.8 A4 with various mods including the PES G2 supercharger. I sold it to buy an S4. If you are getting an A4, I suggest getting the 1.8T. You can get more power easier with the 1.8 than with the 2.8.
If you are on a budget, I can't really recommend an S4 unless you are willing and able to work on the car yourself.

true... but if you find a 2.8 30v for a steal the super would be a option....
without having knowledge of the supercharger kits on the market..... are they reliable?
