Default S4 Dream car? or money pit?

Ok, so I am getting ready to buy my dream car... B5 S4! I have loved this car for years and am ready to get one, but I keep getting shunned by people saying that it is going to be a money pit and a pain cause it has so many problems. I need some feedback from the REAL owners of this car who actually know. I am 25 and not rich so this is a big investment. Is this a bad decision? Thanks

Default DIY: Hit. Need a mechanic? Skip.

i'm talking about the odds and ends. obviously if the turbos go you'll need an engine hoist at the very least.

True, if I used a mechanic I wouldn't have this car.

Rate the DIY difficulty 0-10 for most problems, most say 8

Default if you can do oil, plugs, suspension, brakes, timing belt... stuff like that -- you should be okay

things like transmission/turbo work most of us need a shop for.

it's the maintenance that will kill you if you have to pay a shop to do it all the time

Some are good, some are troublesome. Not all are bad, though.

Default money pit? not sure i agree with that...

sure i have put big $$$ into my S4, but i cannot say that it has not performed to every penny that i have put into it.

so for me, i would consider a true "money pit" where you keep dumping $$ into it, and getting nothing back.
