S4 order
I've been trying without luck to get an '01 S4 (tiptronic, red or yellow) in
Boston. A local dealer I spoke to said he might be able to find one at
another dealership (through an online search), but claims that he can't
search cars other dealers have on order, only those already sitting on a
lot. Is this bs? Can anyone recommend a dealer in Boston?
I may decide to do a factory order. I've done this before for Chrysler
(Eagle Talon), but the Audi process seems somewhat different. Could someone
describe how this works? (aside from "you put down a deposit and 12 months
later your S4 arrives" }:0 )
Thanks
Rory

Re: S4 order
I'm no expert but since I have a car on order I'll try and help. If you go with a factory order, the dealer will take a deposit ($500 or so) then check to see if he has a car comming in that matches your order and is not spoken for. If he doesn't, he'll see if he can change the specs on a car that is on order but not yet "in production". If all else fails they'll initiate a new order and you'll have the car in about 12 weeks.
I placed my order in April 29th and my car will be here in around 2-3 weeks.
Hope this helps...<p>'01 Santorin/Silver - 6spd

Re: S4 order - My Experience
It probably is somewhat dealer specific.
The process for me was:
1. Put down $500 deposit to get on the waiting list.
2. When the dealer's allocation come up - the next person is on the waiting list is contacted.
3. Raise your deposit to 10% of MSRP
4. Configure and order the car.
5. Wait.
6. Nag you dealer for status updates.
I only heard about the following:
- In production.
- On the boat.
- On the water.
- It's here!
7. Car is delivered.
8. Pay for it.
I've now had my S4 for about 22 hours. I was on the waiting list for about 6 weeks and then the order was placed on Apr. 27th. Car was delivered yesterday.

I've also heard that dealers cant search orders from other dealers...
It's best to contact all of the dealers in the area and ask if they have a match that is in production or on the boat. If they say that they have a match and they take your deposit, then you absolutely must get an reference number, and preferably a VIN number from them. Otherwise there is nothing stopping them from giving your car to someone else who might be willing to pay more. Then they will tell your that your order got "delayed".

Audi needs a formal custom order process
While I had a pretty good experience, it was obvious that the dealer could have given my car to someone else and I would have had no recourse.
I'm sure the dealers don't want a formal process since then they loss control. (IMHO)
