I'm thinking about buying an S4. I was wondering if anyone has a list of major problems (or things I should check) to look for before buying a stock 2000 s4 with around 40k on it? Thanks...

a thorough inspection. Its common practice with 911's as I discovered when I bought mine, I'm suprised its not common practice for all performance cars out of warranty.
A competant local Audi shop, or a dealer ought to be able to do a reasonable inspection for a couple hundred bucks.

I would keep looking and saving money for a 2001.5. I would never ever never ever never ever
never ever buy a first year production car i don't care who makes the damn thing. If your heart is set on the thing go see it when the engine is butt *** cold, have someone start it while you stand behind the car if it smokes blue upon starting, if so walk away. Go drive the thing and when it is fully warmed up go stand behind it and have someone give it a lot of gas and if it smokes anything, walk away. Also, have someone drive behind you when you gun it, you will lose them but if the car smokes blue under full throttle, walk away. There is a ton of stuff you need to check. I would once again stay away from 2000 model, but i am sure lots of people with 2k models will swear by them. Just do your homework. good luck and tell us how you do

You're more likely to have turbo problems, flaky radios, brakes in need to replacement, busted engine mounts, etc... on a high milage car, a compression test might be a good idea, but its the multitude of little things that are expensive to fix you have to be worried about on middle-aged cars.

There was a small redesign with the Turbos in 2001.5 but if the car is unchipped you probably have nothing to worry about. Just one mans opinion.
